Honestly, I feel that the best way to learn how to play the piano is through private lessons but this could be my own bias since I grew up taking piano lessons. At the same time, private piano lessons can be expensive.
Nowadays, there are a lot of resources out there to where beginners can learn from home. Which ever direction you end up going, I would recommend starting off playing music that interests you most. By doing this, it will be a lot easier for you to stay motivated during the rough times. Learning to play the piano can be difficult at times but if you truly enjoy what you're doing, it won't bother you as much. It's like a job - if you hate your job (or the music you're playing) you are more likely to quit early.
The Play Smooth Piano DVDs that we sell are designed to help beginners (through advanced players) play the piano while learning some music theory at the same time. After playing a whole bunch of songs, you will be able to understand how chord progressions are used to construct a song (and will most likely eventually start composing your own music).
There are some nice starter pianos made my Yamaha and Casio. If you want a keyboard that has a more natural feel (to that of a real piano) then maybe you want to look into getting a piano with weighted keys. If you want to save some money, the non-weighted keys are fine as well. If you are seriously trying to learn the piano/keyboard, make sure it has a pedal. This opens up a whole new way of playing music. Basically, for about $100, you can get a modest keyboard/piano that will have a pedal (and possibly even weighted keys).
Hopefully this helps answers your question. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have anytime.
