Welcome to the forum Nicholas. The Mary J. Blige song you were referring to is a nice one. When she's singing the versus, there are no distinct harmonizations taking place nor is there a unique melody (aside from her actually singing). The hook is where we get most of the information from.
I can hear 2 main chords that can fit during the versus. I'll give this song a shot and post the chord progressions on the forum some time soon.

Ok I figured out an arrangement for this song. To start things off, the Mary J. Blige song "I'm Going Down" is in the key of G major. During the verse the two main chords are:
Verse 1.) Em7 [2nd inversion: (B,D,E,G) or (3,5,6,1)] 2.) Am7 [ (A,C,E,G) or (2,4,6,1) ]
and they are both played around middle C.
-note: by using the number system, I'm assuming G is 1, therefore, in the scale G,A,B,C,D,E,F# we can write this as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
The base note is simply G. For example, when the song starts, the right hand will play Em7 (2n inv) while the left hand plays a G an octave lower. After a 4 count, the right hand will play the second chord (Am7). This is repeated until the bridge occurs.
Once she begins to sing the bridge, the chords are as follows:
Bridge 1.) Right Hand (RH) = Em7 (2nd inversion) , Left Hand (LH) = G 2.) RH = Am7, LH = A 3.) RH = chord 1, LH = G 4.) RH = Am (add A an octave higher), LH = A "(my) whole" RH = Bm (add B an octave higher), LH = B "worlds" RH = CMaj (add C an octave higher), LH = C "up"
note: the last chord is played staccato.
After the bridge, continue with the chords played in the verse. Hopefully this helps.
